Notes from the field II -- an engine made of wood

'Tenía una amiga española que un día me preguntó si en Senegal tenemos coches. Yo, de broma, le contesté: "pues claro que tenemos coches, lo que pasa es que como somos tan pobres y no tenemos zapatos, los motores los hacemos de madera, y en las cuestas arriba sacamos los pies y empujamos. Me contestó: "ay qué ver, lo sostenibles que sois en Senegal." ¡¡No me lo podía creer, se pensaba que hablaba en serio!! Y de verdad que ese es nuestro mayor problema: que en África nos pensamos que en Europa el dinero crece en los árboles, y en Europa pensáis que todos los negros andamos por la selva con taparrabos. Hasta que no solucionemos esa ignoracia no podremos empezar a hablar de solucionar el resto.' (Entrevista)

'This Spanish friend asked if we had cars in Senegal. Jokingly, I said: " but of course!! The diference is that, since we are so poor and have no shoes, the engine is made out of wood, and in steep slopes we push the car ourselves. She answered: "wow, that's so sustainable!!" I couldn't believe my ears, she thought I was serious!! And really, that's our biggest problem: that in Africa we think that money grows from the trees in Europe, and in Europe you think that all Africans wear a loincloth and live in the jungle. We won't be able to solve any problems until we sit down and learn about each other.' (Interview)
